Zero Effluent Discharge Technology For Palm Oil Mill

Unaccountable oils spillage and environmental damages in palm oil milling industries by using conventional process in the oil-clarification room had urged two chemical engineers, Ronnie Tan and Mohamad Sulong to develop a new technique for crude palm oil clarification process back in 1993. After some thorough studies and research of the product characteristics and filtration equipment in various stages, a pilot plant was set up in 1994 with MPOB, which the membrane filter press was used in the crude palm oil clarification process to recover trapped oil and to remove solids.

Design Concept

  • To recover as much free oil and solid as possible.
  • To reuse the solid as by-product (compost fertilizer).
  • To protect the environment by minimizing the BOD load to the effluent.

The Technologies

  • Oil recovering using Oil Separator (Lamella patented design) with an efficiency of 98%.

In Palm Oil Mill, the fully automated membrane presses are used to separate solid sludge and fibre from water and oil, thereby allow the discharge of clean liquid effluent for easy treatment.

In Palm Oil Refinery, the fully automated presses are used to separate Palm stearine from Palm olein in palm oil fractionation processes. The 7 bars press is used for normal Palm oil fractionation. The 15 and 30 bars presses are used for Palm Kernel oil, Palm Mid-fraction and hard-stearine fractionation processes. Many special products can be obtained from these processes for special applications. With years of palm oil fractionation experiences, we possess special separation programme to achieve product quality we are aiming at.
